Review:

The opening chapters of this user-friendly book invite the reader to step over the threshold and begin to explore the enchanting (please excuse the pun!) world of sound, the Veda and Vedic Chant. The following chapters then outline the rules of chanting in language that is clear and easy to follow – and there is a useful glossary of the Sanskrit terms used throughout the book. The texts of a number of well-known chants, including opening and closing prayers are presented (in Romanised Sanskrit with diacritical markings) and the meaning and significance of these texts is explained. “The Art of Vedic Chanting” was inspired by the UNESCO announcement in 2003 which declared Vedic Chanting to be an intangible heritage of humanity, As a handbook for both teachers and students, it will be a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in Vedic Chant, from novices to more experienced chanters.
